About Us

History

Our current department, the Department of Dermatology, Faulty of Medicine, University of Yamanashi, Faculty of Medicine ・Graduate School of Medical Service was officially recognized in 1983 after the previous institution, Yamanashi Medical University, had already been established.
Our first professor was the late Professor Yoshiaki Hori (transferred to Kyushu University to teach in 1987). The second was the late Professor Kunihiko Tamaki (transferred to Tokyo University in 1994). Our current and the third professor is Professor Shinji Shimada (former Assistant Professor, The University of Tokyo Hospital (Branch Hospital) until March 1995).
In October, 2002, Yamanashi Medical University unified and became the Faculty of Medicine, University of Yamanashi. In April, 2003, it was recognized as an Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Medicine and Engineering, Yamanashi University. Furthermore, in April of 2004, it has been reorganized as a national university corporation, University of Yamanashi.
There were only seven staff members when the Department of Dermatology was established. They were devoted to conducting research on cutaneous tumors, targeting malignant melanomas. After Professor Tamaki took his post, we started to develop our study of cutaneous immunology based on the Langerhans cells. Since Professor Shimada’s arrival, our efforts have been focused on studying tumor immunity of malignant melanomas, HIV infection etc.
Professor Shimada has been and continues to contribute time and effort to various organizations and conferences within the field of Dermatology.  He served as a Chairperson for The Japanese Society for Investigative Dermatology from 2005-2008, and since 2012 he has been involved with the Japan Dermatological Association.  Professor Shimada has held various academic conferences as well: International Investigative Dermatology (IID) in Kyoto, 2008, The 74th Annual Meeting of the Eastern Japan Division of JDA in Yamanashi, 2009, The Japanese Society for Dermatoallergology and Contact Dermatitis in Yamanashi, 2011, and Japanese Skin Cancer Society in Yamanashi, 2013. These conferences were enormously well-received from both academic and hospitality perspectives.
The Department of Dermatology, University of Yamanashi, faculty today consists of: 16 doctors working within the university, 11 doctors working for associated hospitals, 1 staff members studying abroad, 2 Department Secretaries, and 1 Laboratory Assistant.  Our department’s core faculty are all alumni having studied under Professor Shimada.  Due to his great leadership and Instruction abilities, all the faculty and staff have been able to grow in an excellent educational environment.  They are now capable of cultivating a sense of unity and solidarity.  Professor Shimada served as the Director of the University of Yamanashi Hospital from 2009 to 2014, and in 2015 he was elected as the President of the University of Yamanashi. Dr. Kawamura was promoted to an Associate Professor. Our youthful, energetic members are smoothly running and working on medical care, conducting research and contributing education with great teamwork.
